Engineer setting up BPM-5 engine on test bed. The first of those two groups, Copenhagen Suborbitals, is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is the brainchild of Peter Madsen, who has experience building his own submarine. Madsen was in charge of getting their rocket to fly high enough and Bengtson was to be in charge of keeping Madsen alive during the flight. Today, the group is staffed by a myriad of volunteers and supported by sponsorships and donations, all sharing that same initial goal. They also offer guided tours of the facility, and they update their Facebook page significantly more often than the blog with photos and progress updates.

The team was created by Ky Michaelson. Having conducted multiple rocket launches in an attempt to establish altitude records, CSXT became the first entity to officially launch an amateur rocket into space on May 17 , with the successful launch of its "GoFast" rocket to km 72 miles altitude, an altitude verified by FAA analysis of the team's flight data. Prior privately funded space launches were achieved by the Orbital Sciences Pegasus , and many amateur teams have made unverified claims of rocket flights exceeding the boundary of space. The team was established in by a group of model rocket hobbyists interested in spaceflight.
On Saturday the Metro section ran an article on a team of undergraduates at Boston University that plans to launch a custom-built rocket to the lower edge of space this July. It would be a dramatic feat that would put them in company with the top amateur rocketry organizations around the world. The BU effort comes at the same time that companies like SpaceX and Orbital Sciences are moving ahead with plans to conduct passenger and cargo deliveries to space.
